A recent study by Citizens Protein Project showed that many protein products manufactured in India do not contain the amount of protein claimed on labels, and again highlighted the issue of "protein spiking" in the industry.
For the study, 36 protein supplements were analyzed and 25 of the protein supplements were found to have mislabeled protein content, with one product having a 62% lower protein content than listed on the packaging.
Informed Protein is currently the only third-party protein certification and protein supplement testing program specifically designed to prevent the practice of protein spiking. Along with testing for protein spiking, Informed Protein also considers the risk of adulteration or cross-contamination at manufacturing facilities by incorporating a check on the free amino acid content, a targeted screen for common adulterants, and facility audits that provide oversight of the manufacturer's quality process.
