Rising Protein Prices Drive Consumers to Demand Transparency in Supplements

10 November 2025

The cost of producing Protein sports supplements has increased significantly in recent times, caused by a combination of economic, environmental, and market forces.

The Impact on Manufacturers and Brands

Whey, the key ingredient in many protein powders, is closely tied to the price of milk. Increases in feed and fertilizer costs, unpredictable weather, and climate-related crop issues have pushed dairy prices upward.

The costs of transportation through higher fuel prices, container shortages, shipping delays, and general inflation all add to logistics and packaging expenses. Energy-intensive production processes make manufacturers especially vulnerable to spikes in power costs. Currency fluctuations and the uncertainty around trade tariffs are all influencing supply chains, while general inflation is raising the cost of everything from labour to raw materials.

Manufacturers and brands are having to choose between absorbing these rising costs or passing them on to consumers. Brands that clearly communicate their quality standards and transparent sourcing are more likely to retain consumer confidence despite price increases.

Can transparency drive greater loyalty?

Companies that invest in transparency and rigorous quality control will be best positioned to justify higher prices and maintain trust in a competitive market. According to an article in CEO Today ‘The Impact of Transparency on Consumer Trust in the Dietary Supplement Industry’, brands that embrace transparency in their labelling, sourcing, and quality assurance practices can build a brand image that differentiates them in an increasingly competitive market.

Today’s consumers are more informed than ever and expect brands to provide clear, honest information about their products. A consumer survey carried out by ITC in 2023 found that 67% of consumers said that greater transparency would increase the likelihood of purchasing the product, adding that they were willing to pay 2% to 10% more for products from companies that provide this. In addition, 40% said that a trusted quality seal on the label would increase the likelihood of purchasing the product.

Consumer Confidence in Protein Supplements

While many reputable sports supplement companies adhere to high-quality standards, a body of academic and investigative research indicates that consumers should be cautious when purchasing protein supplements.

Numerous academic studies have raised concerns about the accuracy of protein content claims on sports supplement labels, with some research suggesting that products may contain less protein than advertised. For example, a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition analysed 35 popular commercially available protein supplements and found that a substantial number contained less protein than stated, with discrepancies in some cases exceeding 20%.

Product surveys by LGC in the UK and US markets have revealed similar issues. In the UK, 11 out of 41 products tested had protein content below what was claimed on the Nutrition Facts label, while in the US, 15 of 61 products showed the same discrepancy. India has seen comparable challenges, with approximately 70% of tested products failing to display accurate label claims, contributing to significant consumer trust concerns in the sector.

Building Trust in Protein Verification

Building on a scientific heritage spanning 182 years, we have long been committed to quality, innovation, and integrity in testing and verification. Our origins date back to 1842, when we began analyzing tobacco for adulteration—detecting the addition of substances intended to increase profits and evade duty—before extending our expertise to other foodstuffs and soap. By 1875, we were appointed Referee Analysts under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, meaning our findings were accepted in court.

Today, that same dedication to rigorous, impartial analysis underpins Informed Protein, a solution for verifying protein supplement label claims. Leveraging our position as a world leader in doping control and supplement testing, Informed Protein provides assurance that certified protein brands and product label claims have been verified independently, thereby providing confidence that the amount of protein within a product matches what's listed on the label.
